Ships can thwart pirates with LRAD

Police forces have always been in search of a device that can be used from a distance to repel crowds or protestors without use of excessive force. One such device is the long range acoustic device (LRAD) developed by American Technology Corporation. This small portable device weighing only 20 kg can emit deafening sounds that can permanently damage hearing. It has a range of up to 300 meters. The warning tone itself is a high pitched shrill tone analogous to that of a home smoke detector alarm.

The long range acoustic device was initially meant to be used by American warships to caution other inward bound vessels approaching without authorization. While the device is supposed to be non lethal, it can definitely damage hearing for good and also blur vision if one is close by. It is similar to a megaphone but thousand times more effective.

The LRAD is now used in many places like  Iraq and Afghanistan and has also been used by many governments to quell down protestors.

Now, the LRAD has found another use. It is now carried on many vessels to thwart pirates. The effectiveness of this device are anecdotal when it comes to repelling pirates but so far all reports indicate it does a great job.

It is highly recommended that the individual who use this device and all other personnel  in the vicinity wear ear plugs, headsets or head phones which may bring the noise down to low levels. Moreover, when not careful, the sound can also be reflected back from a solid surface and come back to the operator. Thus, the LRAD is supposed to be operated in a wide open spaces.

And I guess Pirates would never, ever, ever think to wear ear protection themselves? What’s next
