World AIDS Day

Today December 1, 2009 is World AIDS day and dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS crises which continues to affect millions of people throughout the world. World Aids day is marked in many countries and most officials from the department of health and social services observe the day with conferences and speeches.

AIDS is a serious infection which has already killed close to 25 million people since it was first diagnosed in 1981. Today, it is estimated that close to 33 million people have AIDS and the numbers are not declining.

AIDS was the first virus which brought awareness that liberal sexual behavior was dangerous. Despite the availability of many anti viral drugs, children in the developing and third world continue to die chiefly because these drugs are not available- simply due to cost. While a few vaccines have been developed, the effectiveness has not been great. Plus there is also a danger that the vaccine itself may cause AIDs.

World AIDs day has continued to focus its efforts on prevention of this disease. The common theme all over the world is to teach people that AIDs is a sexual disease and affects everyone.

The theme for World Aids day is “Stop AIDS, keep the promise”
